Timeless ministry from the timeless gospel
From the early 1970s through to the late 1990s, many churches operated with analogue cassette tape recordings of their preaching ministry.
Worthing Tabernacle, which came to be one of the largest independent evangelical churches in England, operated one such ministry, sharing predominantly the preaching ministry of Dr Tony Sargent. Tony’s preaching ministry was widely admired, in particular in Africa and Asia, where he travelled extensively involved in Christian mission and humanitarian projects. He was known to many simply as “Uncle Tony.”
One person writing a blog article in 2009 commented:
“Tony Sargent, [is] surely one of the UK’s greatest living preachers. I remember Sargent once preaching on the ‘height and depth, the length and breadth’ of the love of Christ in Karachi Cathedral and when he finished, there was a deep silence, and the priest announcing the next hymn could barely fight back his tears. This was anointed preaching.
There was no shouting, no theatre, just a quiet intensity as he spoke on the cross, and at some point during the sermon there was this sense of another presence.”
This website operates with the conviction that the word of God has been living and active throughout history, and that we do well to learn from some of these unique preaching ministries of the recent past.
Much of Dr Tony Sargent’s preaching exists now only on old audio cassette tapes that have somehow been safeguarded through the years. This library has been created to preserve, organise and make that ministry available today.
